This is the story of an ordinary woman whose grief - and love - for her only son compelled her to do something extraordinary. When Margaret Davis's beloved son Steven was murdered by his own wife, a Philippino former prostitute, she travelled across continents to track down her son's killers and bring them to justice, and to rescue her grandchildren. Based on Margaret's own diaries, notes and emails, this tells not only the awful but utterly compelling story of her perilous journey, but also of how she has dealt with her crippling grief, and how she has striven to save and protect two small children caught up in the violent crossfire of their parents' failing marriage. It is a tale of two cultures that clashed, with terrible results. And it is a tale of how one mother, faced with her worst nightmare, has fought for justice for her son and some kind of healing for herself and the others left behind after his appalling death.

This book of poetry is from my heart. These words came out of a place so deep within me that it sustained my life when I wanted to die too as I watched my son's life slip away. The story of this dying process comes from my perspective. It's the best I can give you. My son, Thomas, had to endure the pain and suffering of cancer and an amputation that could never heal plus the fear and dread of leaving a wife and young child, which is a sorrow I cannot even imagine for such a tender loving man and devoted father. The story poured out of my heart through my fingertips and onto the page as the great river of grief flowed through me. Allowing it, so I later learned, is what awakened in me the ancient force I was longing to reconnect to, but had forgotten how... my soul. I wrote these poems for myself, it was how I survived the grief of my son's death. Now I want to share my son's story, his love, my love, the love that runs through us and is us. May the thread of connectedness be revealed so that in hearing our story, you may take courage when the time comes and really give yourself permission to be present and truly show up!!! In the end the only thing that really matters is love. Through poetry I have woven a web of connectedness, a bridge into the shared heart of a mother and her dying son. The way is lighted for you, but your experience will be your own. you will learn what there is for you to learn. There are no words to describe some things and poetry is such a beautiful way to give these "no words" expression. The deepest experience is awarded those who can read between the lines. I encourage you to read aloud those passages that bring tears to your eyes or a lump in your throat. You do me honor which I pass on to my son. These words came from a place so deep within that it sustained me when I wanted to die in sympathy as I watched the life force slip away from my son's wasting body. Through grief I encountered my soul ... and re-awakened to my soul journey.

A story with a difference, this poignant autobiography is filled with real life drama. Embark on a nostalgic journey through the harsh Depression era and on through the hardships of the War years to the present day. Observe the vast changes that have brought us from the rigid and moralistic society of yesterday to the vastly different liberal mindset of today. The universal thread that runs throughout lends an air of familiarity. It is difficult not to identify with one of the characters-perhaps with the young girl herself in her struggles to persevere, or with the woman she ultimately becomes. Here is a story of contrasts from the depths of despair to the pinnacle of joy-a story that defies the odds. Here is a rendering that tugs at the heartstrings. Poignant, yet redeeming, this uplifting account will serve as an inspiration to all who struggle similarly-as well as to those who love them.
In The End of Satisfaction, Heather Hirschfeld recovers the historical specificity and the conceptual vigor of the term “satisfaction” during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Focusing on the term’s significance as an organizing principle of Christian repentance, she examines the ways in which Shakespeare and his contemporaries dramatized the consequences of its re- or de-valuation in the process of Reformation doctrinal change. The Protestant theology of repentance, Hirschfeld suggests, underwrote a variety of theatrical plots “to set things right” in a world shorn of the prospect of “making enough” (satisfacere). Hirschfeld’s semantic history traces today’s use of “satisfaction”—as an unexamined measure of inward gratification rather than a finely nuanced standard of relational exchange—to the pressures on legal, economic, and marital discourses wrought by the Protestant rejection of the Catholic sacrament of penance (contrition, confession, satisfaction) and represented imaginatively on the stage. In so doing, it offers fresh readings of the penitential economies of canonical plays including Dr. Faustus, The Revenger’s Tragedy, The Merchant of Venice, and Othello; considers the doctrinal and generic importance of lesser-known plays including Enough Is as Good as a Feast and Love’s Pilgrimage; and opens new avenues into the study of literature and repentance in early modern England.

Let's talk about how we grow into adults and what manhood means. Let's talk brother-to-brother and man-to-man about how we relate to one another as we grow into adults. Let's talk about what defines our maleness and our manhood. Let's talk brother-to-brother as African American men. Let's talk openly and honestly about what it means to be black men and American. We can no longer assume that we all know what it means to be African American men. This is a conversation that is long overdue. Let's talk together and listen to one another.
