Traces the unique qualities of the human species to astronomical events that occurred billions of years ago, revealing how the molecular development of human life can be linked to the evolution of the cosmos.
Winner of the Lane Anderson Award, longlisted for the Charles Taylor Prize, shortlisted for the Libris Award for Non-Fiction and selected as an Amazon.ca Best Book "With [The Universe Within’s] deeply thoughtful reflections on the place of science in society, on the need to educate the underserved, and on plenty of other topics rarely addressed in this sort of book, Turok takes you where no physicist has gone before. It’s well worth making the journey with him." — TIME Magazine The most anticipated nonfiction book of the season, this year's Massey Lectures is a visionary look at the way the human mind can shape the future by world-renowned physicist Neil Turok. Every technology we rely on today was created by the human mind, seeking to understand the universe around us. Scientific knowledge is our most precious possession, and our future will be shaped by the breakthroughs to come. In this personal, visionary, and fascinating work, Neil Turok, Director of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, explores the transformative scientific discoveries of the past three centuries — from classical mechanics, to the nature of light, to the bizarre world of the quantum, and the evolution of the cosmos. Each new discovery has, over time, yielded new technologies causing paradigm shifts in the organization of society. Now, he argues, we are on the cusp of another major transformation: the coming quantum revolution that will supplant our current, dissatisfying digital age. Facing this brave new world, Turok calls for creatively re-inventing the way advanced knowledge is developed and shared, and opening access to the vast, untapped pools of intellectual talent in the developing world. Scientific research, training, and outreach are vital to our future economy, as well as powerful forces for peaceful global progress. Elegantly written, deeply provocative, and highly inspirational, The Universe Within is, above all, about the future — of science, of society, of ourselves.
A provocative look at the purpose of life through a mixture of religion, science and personal experience! The Universe Within Us is a mixture of science, religion, and personal experience that offers a new, more truthful understanding of our place and purpose in the universe, and to the inevitable conclusion that every human being possess a spiritual nature. Offering insight into every thinking persons look at life, the author argues that the answers to the purpose of life have long been the domain of priests and clergy, and, more recently, scientists. The religious answers often leave the intellect out and defy what the rational mind can accept. The scientific answers satisfy the intellect at the expense of the heart and soul. Drawing on all resources available: from the sciences, from the world's sacred scriptures, and from personal observations and experiences, Harper offers a unique map of the universe, and an explanation of life's purpose that is truly satisfying.
This Book Focuses On The Various Human Qualities Associated With Each Energy Centre And Points Out How To Recognize, Control And Direct The Peculiarities Of Each Chakra So That The Seeker May Travel Safely Towards The Goal Of Absolute Happiness.
In The Universe Within, Neil Shubin, one of the world's leading experts, reveals to us the extraordinary cosmic and evolutionary adventure of our own bodies. During the past 13.7 billion years (or so) since the Big Bang, our universe has evolved, stars have formed and died and our planet congealed from the matter in space. For aeons, the earth has circled the sun while mountains, seas and entire continents have come and gone. Against this epic backdrop, humanity's place in the cosmos can look tiny and insignificant. But as Neil Shubin shows in this revelatory new book, the one place where universe, solar system and planet merge is inside your body. Shubin shows how the origin of the Moon is tied to our internal body clocks; how the vast amounts of water on Earth and inside all living creatures crossed the deepest stretches of space to us; how strange fluctuations in the orbits within our solar system have led to our irregular ice-ages; and how tiny imbalances in the chaos immediately after the Big Bang can explain why matter exists at all. Delving below the earth's surface and into the frozen Arctic, exploring the smallest atomic structures and the vast reaches of space, Neil Shubin uncovers a sublimely beautiful, almost magical truth: that in every one of us lies the most profound story of all - how we and our world came to be. 'Shubin is not only a distinguished scientist, but a wonderfully lucid and elegant writer; he is an irrepressibly enthusiastic teacher ... a science writer of the first rank', Oliver Sacks Neil Shubin is a palaeontologist in the great tradition of his mentors, Ernst Mayr and Stephen Jay Gould. He has discovered fossils around the world that have changed the way we think about many of the key transitions in evolution and has pioneered a new synthesis of expeditionary palaeontology, developmental genetics and genomics. He trained at Columbia, Harvard and Berkeley and is currently a Professor in the Department of Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago. His previous book is Your Inner Fish: The amazing discovery of our 375-million-year-old ancestor.
Built from the debris of exploding stars that floated through space for billions of years, home to a zoo of tiny aliens, and controlled by a brain with more possible connections than there are atoms in the universe, the human body is the most incredible thing in existence. In the sequel to his bestselling Inflight Science, Brian Clegg explores mitochondria, in-cell powerhouses which are thought to have once been separate creatures; how your eyes are quantum traps, consuming photons of light from the night sky that have travelled for millions of years; your many senses, which include the ability to detect warps in space and time, and why meeting an attractive person can turn you into a gibbering idiot. Read THE UNIVERSE INSIDE YOU and you'll never look at yourself the same way again.

This book is about how to gain control of your health. It talks very simply about how to communicate with the atoms of your body. Your body is made up of atoms, so if you would like to be given a tool to be able to recreate who you are through the atoms of your body, this book is for you. Cancer has taken a grip on humanity, and this book will help release you from that grip. This book also talks about the aliens that are now so prevalent on our planet. Ian Welch has been communicating with aliens who are helping us to get ready for the birth of a second sun in our solar system. We are to become a binary system within the next fifteen years. This book will help you prepare for what is surely to come.
Interviews with scientists in the forefront of research and discovery in the workings of the mind underlie an examination of the brain's evolution, physiology, and functions and of thought processes, problem solving, and creativity
THE FIVE AGES OF THE UNIVERSE is a riveting biography of the universe which describes for the first time five distinct eras that Adams and Laughlin themselves defined as a result of their own research. From the first gasp of inflation that caused the Big Bang, through the birth of stars, to the fading of all light, THE FIVE AGES OF THE UNIVERSE describes the death of our own sun, tremendous fiery supernovae explosions, dramatic collisions of galaxies, proton decay, the evaporation of black holes and the possibility of communications when there are no planets or stars or even black holes left. This is a voyage to a land of red giants, white dwarfs, brown dwarfs, great walls larger than galaxies and WIMPs. With daring uncharacteristic of most scientists, the authors have applied themselves to the question of what precise kind of biology could possibly exist when, say, carbon atoms no longer exist. What, ultimately, is a lifeform? Their insight into the fundamental physics that allows life is both fascinating and provocative. Readers will find all the strange colour of science fiction with none of the fiction in this awesome scientific epic.
The Universe is not separate from us. We have the capability to realize it from within. It can be done using what we have and our own human experience. We live in a world of sense based existence. We need reference frames to orient ourselves. We rely on points of origin and dimensions to understand everything around us. From this view, we feel distinctly separate from the Universe. In a relativistic referential system that we have adopted over the past few thousand years, we sense extremes and our existence seems to be defined by these extremes. We move between nights and days, differentiate between hot and cold, prefer good over evil, know the past and anticipate the future, go between likes and dislikes and so on. These extremes seem very real to us due to our conditioning in the reference based system of existence. We tend to look outward for answers to many unknowns that are yet to be known. Ancient systems like the ones that have survived in India have a different approach. There are innumerable systems in India, collectively known as Hinduism (which is a geographical term rather than a religious one). Though they differ in their paths, they all share a fundamental principle. This principle is based on approaching everything in a simple way, going inward, realizing the gap between the extremes, entering the gap, balancing out the extremes and finding the link with the Universe that now seems to pervade through everyone. The book narrates how everything is viewed from the street level and goes beyond the street into the inner homes and the temples of humans. As the inner sanctum is approached, one realizes that he or she is the temple itself and the Universe within.
A fascinating chronicle of the evolution of humankind traces the genetic history of the organs of the human body, offering a revealing correlation between the distant past and present-day human anatomy and physiology, behavior, illness, and DNA. Reprint. 75,000 first printing.
Explains how science and religion can work together to alleviate human suffering, arguing that understanding the connections between science and faith holds the key to achieving peace both within oneself and the world at large.

"If Ms. Frizzle were a physics student of Stephen Hawking, she might have written THE UNIVERSE IN YOUR HAND, a wild tour through the reaches of time and space, from the interior of a proton to the Big Bang to the rough suburbs of a black hole. It's friendly, excitable, erudite, and cosmic." —Jordan Ellenberg, New York Times besteselling author of How Not To Be Wrong Quantum physics, black holes, string theory, the Big Bang, dark matter, dark energy, parallel universes: even if we are interested in these fundamental concepts of our world, their language is the language of math. Which means that despite our best intentions of finally grasping, say, Einstein's Theory of General Relativity, most of us are quickly brought up short by a snarl of nasty equations or an incomprehensible graph. Christophe Galfard's mission in life is to spread modern scientific ideas to the general public in entertaining ways. Using his considerable skills as a brilliant theoretical physicist and successful young adult author, The Universe in Your Hand employs the immediacy of simple, direct language to show us, not explain to us, the theories that underpin everything we know about our universe. To understand what happens to a dying star, we are asked to picture ourselves floating in space in front of it. To get acquainted with the quantum world, we are shrunk to the size of an atom and then taken on a journey. Employing everyday similes and metaphors, addressing the reader directly, and writing stories rather than equations renders these astoundingly complex ideas in an immediate and visceral way. Utterly captivating and entirely unique, The Universe in Your Hand will find its place among other classics in the field.
This book delves deep into the genesis and power of human thought. Human civilization has consistently grown over few millennia but the exponential growth during last few centuries of industrialization and particularly during the last half a century due to digital revolution can be attributed to one single phenomenon called Human Thought Processes. The idea of an acronym for Generation, Operation and Destruction (G-O-D) by human thought has a spiritual background based on Karmic Principles, argues the author in the book. The delicate balance in the brain chemicals that are responsible for harmonious thought processes can sometimes be severely derailed due to modern day anxiety and stress causing immense agonies leading to serious mental health problems. The author had a firsthand experience of such a mental health crisis in July 2000 while during his PhD study in Adelaide, Australia almost leading to a Near Death Experience which he not only survived but could convert the crisis into an opportunity to harvest immense knowledge and wisdom for self-growth. The author has adopted partly an autobiographical approach to put across ideas that he thinks can find some resonance with people struggling to overcome similar mental health problems in life. While researching into concepts of life after death, he raises few questions about the current understanding of human consciousness. The ultimate realization of the author that Humans are infinite spiritual beings in finite bodies has been systematically and logically brought out to enable a conviction that mental health problems are better handled with medico-spiritual practices. The title of the book suggests that to achieve happiness and bliss in life, human beings anywhere in this world need not search elsewhere because it is all there within. The author has outlined all the practical steps which helped him not only overcome his serious crisis but achieve his desired goals and thus sublime happiness. He strongly believes in the universal application of the principles enumerated.
He wanted to find out what was going on in the universe. Why was a part of it disappearing? And, why was the curvaceous babe with loads of money getting in his way? His assistant was in love with him and helpful - but could he really count on her? Sample of the book: "His glasses were steamed up, his vision blurred, he was tired and irritable and on top of all that he could not get away from the lab. That cursed deadline imposed on him by the Administration was not helping either - they wanted results yesterday! Manheim, Theodore R - did not like his name so he had changed it to "Theo." He did this deliberately, despite the fact that his parents and later his tutors had repeatedly told him that a name like "Theo" was not a proper name for such a gifted young man. In response and in further revolt, whenever he got the chance, he would spread his name in its shortened form across some of his most formal and studious papers. Apart from a dislike of his name, Theo was one of those gifted individuals who disowned any and all responsibilities if he could avoid them; he considered this his right. Way deep down, when it came to the crunch - he was quite a responsible person. His talent and genius for the Sciences had earned him more diplomas certificates and awards than he knew what to do with - all of which interested him little or not at all. He tended to keep a token few of them on the mantle in his living room to please his folks and retired them to the closet when new ones came along to replace them. Theo's ability to duplicate and understand complicated mathematical formulas, scientific equations and jargon, had always been with him. The more he used his ability the better and better he got at it. In school his talent or skill (if you want to call it that) made him some enemies and won him few friends. The popular athletic-type boys did not appreciate the fact that he could spend all his time at parties with the girls while they studied very hard. They resented further the fact that it would simply take him a few hours to scan some books, finish first in exams - and then walk away with honors! There were some things he liked about school though. Like the time he was invited by the Dean, in his last year of college, to spend the summer with the Dean's family at their retreat in the mountains. The Dean's daughter, Polly-Ann, sure liked him...."
